Browning and dispersed foxing on a few leaves. Contemporary hardback binding with handwritten title on spine. Conserved in a half leather slip-case with marbled covers and title impressed on spine.

Monogramma della Compagnia di Gesù inciso in legno al frontespizio, stemma del Dedicatario Papa Urbano VIII xilografato a carta a2, capilettera incisi in legno. Esemplare con bruniture e qualche arrossatura sparsa a poche carte. Legatura coeva in cartonato con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Conservato in cofanetto in mezza pelle con piatti marmorizati e titoli impressi in nero al dorso.

Prima edizione. Cristoforo Borri, gesuita, matematico e astronomo, fu uno dei primi missionari a esplorare la Cocincina e, come il Baldinotti per il Tonchino (vedi lotto 153), il primo a descrivere quella regione del Vietnam; la sua relazione fu tanto ampia, accurata e dettagliata da essere rimasta a lungo la fonte di informazioni più importante sulla Cocincina, di cui descrisse clima, vegetazione, fauna, usi e costumi, forma di governo, storia etc... Cfr. Howgego B136: «In 1616 Borri was sent to Indochina from Macao, accompanied by another Jesuit, Father Marquez. There he stayed until 1621 [...]. Borri's important account the Cochin China missions, published in 1631, is considered one of the best sources of information for the region, describing the physical, political, and ecclesiastical conditions of the country. However, it is the observations that Borri made on the magnetic variation of the compass which many regard as more important. According to Kircher he drew the first isogonal chart for the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, showing the locations where the magnetic needle makes the same angles with the meridian. Il Borri fu un'eminente personalità scientifica dell'epoca, soprattutto in Portogallo dove fu chiamato a insegnare al rientro dalla missione in oriente: ebbe inoltre notevole importanza per la diffusione dell'esperienza e del pensiero galileiano fuori dall'italia: «His Collecta Astronomica, published in Lisbon in 1631, is the first printed work in Portugal containing detailed information of Galileo's telescopic observation» (Feingold 236); «Borro, Burrus Christophe passa quelques années dans les indes, et revint enseigner les mathématiques à Coimbre et à Lisbonne. Philippe, roi d'Espagne, le fit venir à Madrid pour lui exposer ses découvertes relatives à la boussole» (Backer 114).
